Physical Activity Recommendations For Young Adults

Overview

Authors Paul D Thompson and Thijs M. H. Eijsvogels revised the original Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans in 2018. 80% of  US young adults and adolescents do not meet the recommended amount of physical activity required for optimal health benefits.

Physical Activity Recommendations

It is recommended that young adults participate in 150-300 minutes of per week of moderate intensity physical activity or 75-150 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise for maximal benefits but....

What was Revised?

The new guidelines provide evidence that even very small or brief amounts of physical activity are beneficial.

Greatest reduction in disease risk was found during the lowest levels of physical activity.

Participants do not need to get in shape to benefit from physical activity. Starting with small exercises will benefit the body and overtime more can be achieved.

Importance

People do not need long and complex exercises or routines to be healthier. Even something as simple as walking up the stairs or taking a walk can make a difference.
